Position Title: School Nurse

Work Schedule: 181 days per year/8 hours per day

Grade/Level:  NURSE

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:   Knowledge of basic health office practices, terminology, procedures, and equipment.  Knowledge of health and safety regulations. Ability to operate a computer and assigned software. Knowledge of record-keeping and report preparation techniques. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone

Exposure to infectious diseases, blood, and bodily fluids    

 

Lifting students and lifting to 40 pounds, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.

 

Ability to assist students in emergency situations requiring a quick pace traversing stairs or hills.                      

 

Qualifications:

Minimum of diploma or associate degree in nursing

Health/first aid field experience including some training and experience in pediatrics and emergency medical care

Training in blood borne pathogen procedures is desirable

Must hold a valid Georgia LPN or RN License

Must possess First Aid and CPR Certificate

Minimum of diploma or associate degree in nursing

The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements.

Essential Functions:

 

Performs routine clinical services as required including basic health assessment and first aid, and follows up in a user-friendly clinic environment

 

Provides appropriate training to personnel for scoliosis screenings

 

Plans, organizes, and implements school screenings

 

Observes students for developmental and health problems and initiates referral process

 

Promotes communicable disease prevention and control by good recordkeeping and reporting cases to nurse supervisor

 

Assists in monitoring immunization records and acts as a resource regarding current immunization practices

 

Provides emergency crisis nursing care as circumstances require

 

Participates in the Individualized Education Plan process by implementing the individual health care plan

 

Identifies, monitors, and appropriately manages students with chronic diseases and disabilities

 

Provides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel and health agencies

 

Notifies parents, guardians, and appropriate school personnel in a timely manner using effective communication skills regarding illness, accidents, etc.

 

Provides direct health education, health counseling and health promotion as necessary

 

Implements the health policies, goals, and objectives of the school district

 

Educates school staff, ASP workers, and bus drivers regarding care of students with food allergies and chronic and acute medical issues

 

Works closely with the Department of Family & Children's Services, school social workers and other community agencies in identified areas of need

 

Monitors and maintains clinic records

 

Plans and implements educational in-service programs

 

Communicates with nursing supervisor, lead nurse, principal, and other staff members regarding school health issues

 

Demonstrates good organizational and time management skills

 

Completes assigned paperwork accurately and in a timely manner

 

Performs other duties as assigned by Superintendent or designee

 

Ability to assist students in emergency situations requiring a quick pace traversing stairs or hills.
