The School Nurse is a vital and supportive member of the PCSD team, working collaboratively with educators, support staff, and administration to achieve the shared goal of ensuring all students receive the education they need to succeed both today and tomorrow. This role is performed within a school environment, overseen by the Nurse Supervisor & School Principal, where teamwork and dedication to student success are paramount.

 

All staff are expected to fully adhere to the ethical standards set forth by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, continuously demonstrating a strong understanding of the tasks and responsibilities their roles require. Position Title: School Nurse

Reports To: Nurse Supervisor

Work Schedule: 179 days per year/8 hours per day

Grade/Level:  LPN-NURSE/RN-RNNRS

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Primary Function:   Provide basic health services at the school level.  Knowledge of basic health office practices, terminology, procedures, and equipment.  Knowledge of health and safety regulations. Ability to operate a computer and assigned software. Knowledge of record-keeping and report preparation techniques. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

Constant Interruptions

Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone.  Seeing to read a variety of materials

Potential exposure to infectious diseases, blood, and bodily fluids

Sitting for extended periods of time

 

Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to file materials

 

Lifting students and lifting to 40 pounds, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.

 

Ability to assist students in emergency situations requiring a quick pace, traversing stairs or hills.                     

 

Qualifications:

Minimum of diploma or associate degree in nursing

Must hold a valid Georgia LPN or RN License

Must possess First Aid and CPR Certificate

Health/first aid field experience including some training and experience in pediatrics and emergency medical care

Training in blood borne pathogen procedures is desirable

The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements.

 

Essential Functions:

Performs routine clinical services as required including basic health assessment and first aid, and follows up in a user-friendly clinic environment

Monitors and maintains clinic records

Plans, organizes, and implements school screenings

Observes students for developmental and health problems and communicates effectively with parents for potential follow-up

Encourages and promotes health education and wellness through best-practice clinic interventions, in accordance with health policies, goals, and objectives of the nursing program

Promotes communicable disease prevention and control by good recordkeeping and reporting cases to the nurse supervisor

Assists in monitoring immunization records and acts as a resource regarding current immunization practices

Supports local school administrators when there is a medical emergency on campus

Participates in the Individualized Education Plan process by implementing the individual health assessment tool, in coordination with the Lead Nurse

Manages and supports students with chronic diseases and disabilities, communicating effectively with parents/guardians and related staff

Notifies parents, guardians, and appropriate school personnel in a timely manner using effective communication skills regarding illness, accidents, etc.

Provides support to school staff regarding care of students with food allergies, emergency medications, and chronic and acute medical issues

Communicates with the nursing supervisor, lead nurse, principal, and other staff members regarding school health issues

Demonstrates good organizational and time management skills

Completes assigned paperwork accurately and in a timely manner

Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee
